The Náplavka Farmer’s Market is opening the 2012 season on Saturday, 4 February. Starting this day, the popular famer’s markets take place every Saturday on Náplavka below Rašín Embankment (Rašínovo nábřeží) near Palacký Bridge. You can expect to find a wide selection of vegetables, fruit, fresh meat from Czech farms, smoked meats from small, family-run butchers’ shops, quality baked goods, classically baked bread, desserts and sweets from the whole Czech Republic, homemade sauerkraut and pickled vegetables, excellent dairy products (also organic), eggs from private and small-scale farms, high-quality chickens as well as refrigerated homemade pasta. As visitors of the farmer’s markets will know, sea fish from the Adriatic Sea, a rather exotic host, is also on offer on at the Náplavka Farmer’s Market. Part of the farmer’s market is a fish grill; you may also wish to recharge your batteries with the help of fair trade coffee.

At the season’s opening Farmer’s Market on Saturday, 4 February, a traditional local speciality, Podskalí grundle (small, usually fried or cooked fish) will be served. These fish used to be caught in the Vltava up to World War II; afterwards they were cooked according to very simple recipes in every proper pub of the peculiar world of the former rafters and workers’ borough of Podskalí.

A technical reminder: The first two markets on Náplavka (i.e. 4 February and 11 February) can be found closer to the Railway Bridge.

The farmer’s market in Jiřího z Poděbrad Square has been open to visitors from Vinohrady and Žižkov and, of course, other parts of town since 21 January. As in the past, this market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday.
