Dear fans of Heřmaňák market, we are happy to share with you that this Saturday – October 7th – the plasticbag-less market at Řezáčovo square in Prague 7 will open up again. The first market day two weeks ago we were all stoked how well prepared you all were with your own shopping bags and doses. There wasn’t even anyone asking for the plastic bags – you are truly wonderful, many thanks for the cooperation and for being so great! This Saturday there will be more of the vegetables so there is no queue and to refresh the assessment a bit, there will be freshly squeezed apple juice on tap (yes, you can bring your own bottle!). We are looking forward to seeing you at Heřmaňák on Saturday and every two weeks after!

How did you come to an initial idea of a plastic bag free market?

We have been concerned about unnecessary waste for a long time. That is why we have come up with the concept of a plastic bag free market which we would like to test out on a new market in Prague 7 – at Řezáčovo square. The market is a smaller local market that is just about to be launched and so we think it is a convenient time to try lessening the amount of waste generated by the market together with sellers and customers.

Was it a tough call to convince sellers to keep plastic bags at home?

Not at all! Everyone was quite excited about the concept. But please note, that not all of the packaging is degradable – because of the hygienic regulations we cannot for example replace packaging for certain dairy and meat products.

What are you going to replace plastic bags with?

For vegetables and fruits shopping we have prepared wicker shopping baskets – they will be then weighed and put into paper or paper bags and then bags or backpacks. Some paper and paper bags will be at disposal either for free or for some small fee. We are actually hoping that customers will like the idea and will start to bring their own bags for vegetables, fruits or other products. Also, the authors of Frusack – light handy bags lasting for years and made out of fully organic and compostable materials – will present their product, exactly meant for environmentally conscious vegetables and fruits shopping. Compostable disposable dishes will be used for serving food on the spot and who would want to go even further, they can borrow then porcelain dishes or glass cups. Or even better – they will bring their own cup.

Is the concept meant as a one-time event or is it meant as a stable added value to the market at Heřmaňák?

We will try making it into a regular event; we are just about to start with four Saturdays – 9th and 23rd of September and 7th and 21st of October – this autumn with the possibility of carrying on. We would like for the market at Heřmaňák to be bag free and are hoping that together with people from around Heřmaňák we will find solutions, how to minimize plastic and waste in general at the market.

Questions were asked by Eva Fornálová, answers given by Šárka Sedláčková and Lenka Sehnalová

A new market at Řezáčovo square in Prague 7 will be taking place every two weeks starting with the 9th of September. You can be looking forward to a cosy local farmers’ market on 9th and 23rd of September and every second Saturday from then on.

Local Czech food in bio or standard quality; ranging from meat and dairy products to seasonal vegetables and various ready-to-munch food stands, local design and flowers – all that to be found at Heřmaňák. Occasional music background and presence of local Prague 7 participants will surely assure a nice level of authenticity.

As we’d like to encourage responsible consupmtion, we’re especially happy to welcome those who shop using their own containers – bags and thus contribute to a lesser ecological footprint. Let’s try contributing together!

The 6th year of the tasting festival “Rosé May”, organized by NGO Archetyp that has been holding the popular farmer’s markets „Náplavka“ for eight seasons already, will take place.

The visitors can look forward to more than thirty kinds of Czech and Moravian winemakers but also to experiencing wine together with gastronomy. There will be grilled fish and seafood, baguettes filled with meat and herbs, vegetarian and vegan specialties, fried potato spirals, blue cheese and ripened cheese, Greek delicacies, dried ham, duck burgers, Ukrainian dumplings “pelmeňe” and “vareniky”, unique vegan bites and much more.

Starting May 3rd Náplavka below Rašínovo nábřeží will come to life on Wednesdays from 9-16. Under the motto: „A bit of Saturday on Wednesdays“, you will be able to find all the basic quality products in a more moderate and relaxed setting than what we are used to from the overcrowded Saturday markets.

We are planning exhibitions, workshops and lectures. Besides that, Wednesdays will bring some of the favorite farmer’s eatables and organic products, vegetables, herbs, salads, seasonal Czech fruit from apples to strawberries, cheese and milk, pastry and fine breads, delicious sausages and meat and other interesting food concepts. Following farms will make their appearance: Biofarm Držovice, Krhanice Farm, Koláček Bakery, Butcher Shop Kvarda and Butcher Shop Libiš. You will also find good meat from organic farms, interesting refreshments, vegetables and herbs from Radka Šťastná, seasonal fruit, asparagus or strawberries, mushrooms, honey and forest berries, flowers and bouquets which will be made as per your preference.

Citizens of Prague 2 who own the „Dvojka pro seniory“ card can enjoy a 10% discount on vegetables and herbs every Wednesday!

The Wednesday market for locals will not be as big as the Saturday one but it will provide all the basics and will allow one to enjoy more relaxing and peaceful atmosphere.

The peaceful and family like character will also be enhanced by the „Intergenerational workshops“ that already have an established tradition on Saturdays. Kids and adults together with the elderly can all engage in crafting. Ranging from having the opportunity to create one’s own cup or jewelry to sewing or face painting, we are hoping to invite not only parents and kids to participate in these spring and summer Wednesdays but also local schools and kindergartens. Wednesday Náplavka below Rašínovo nábřeží should please both one’s soul and body.

For the first Wednesday, May 3rd, together with the team from Creamery Krhanice from Posázaví, we have come up with an original surprise for the visitors (at 10:00 for journalists, 11:00 and 16:00 for public). We will show you how to make butter the old-fashioned way in a wooden kneading bucket and the farm members will also demonstrate the complete process of making mozzarella, which together with the production of ricotta falls under the supervision of an Italian specialist. Cheese tasting will not be missing and every visitor will be able to try the traditional butter kneading method. The whole event will be accompanied with bold music played by the farm members themselves. They will also provide explanation on how butter and cheese used to be made in the past and the way these products are made today.

The following week, Wednesday May 10th, another community farm, Uchované semínko, will introduce itself by presenting principles of thoughtful farming and permaculture. They will also demonstrate how to make home-made bread in their mobile oven.

We will be posting current program as it unfolds.

What can the visitors look forward to besides the usual farmer’s market at Náplavka?

Aside from the regular farmer’s market, under the Výtoň clock, you will find flooding of different herbs directly from the best Czech farmers and advice for growing and cultivation. You will see all the favorite classics (chives, mint, sage, oregano, lemon balm, basil, ramsons, arugula, lovage, rosemary, marjoram, thyme, coriander,…) and also the more exotic herbs (stevia, curry, chili, cayenne pepper, lemon thymes, ginseng, ashwagandha, blackberry lily, garlic chives, mushroom spices, French estragon, Greek oregano, catnip and many others). Apart from herbs, you can delight yourself with seedlings of multicolored flowers and succulent plants, seedlings of balcony tomatoes and interesting varieties of roses.

You will be able to try unusual cuisine or taste raw cakes and sandwiches garnished with herbs and flowers. As refreshments, freshly squeezed vegetable or herbal juices or organic matcha tea will be available. And not to forget the wild herbs: ramsons, nettles, ground elder, ground-ivy, dandelion.

We also recommend pure natural herbal or flower cosmetics with the possibility of professional consultation directly with the maker. This tradition of cosmetics making goes back to the times of the first Czechoslovak Republic when famous Czech actresses used to use it.

Whoever loves herbs, food and spring, please come on Saturday, April 22nd to Náplavka under the Výtoň clock, 8am-4pm

Easter is here again and with it spring has arrived. As we are used to, at Náplavka, traditions will mingle with metropolis. We have prepared a surprising mix for Sunday, April 15th. Regular farmer’s market will be well-prepared from 8am-2pm for Easter holidays with its wide array of delicacies, herbs, flowers…and something extra!

What you definitely should not miss, will be the special extended part of the market located under Výtoň. Here, from 8am-4pm, you will have a chance to see and taste some Easter classics with a pinch of exoticism.

Raw delicacies or hipster pop-up cake shop will meet folklore. All the way from south Moravia there will be granny painted Easter eggs, earthware, indigo prints, slivovitz (plum brandy), but also contemporary design inspired by Moravian folklore motives. Some traditional crafts are also going to be presented. Veronika Koucká from studio Dubina is going to beautifully paint children’s faces, also the ones of adults if they wish so :)

You can try to weave the traditional Easter stick, or you can simply buy it together with pussy willows, twigs, or birch tree leaves. You can experiment with making your own toy with Koira Kissa. You will have a chance to make your own herbal smoothie pedalling the Futurola bike. Exotic fresh and dried fruits, including avocado are going to be among the unique guests of the market.

Planting is an inseparable part of Easter so you will be able to find various vegetable and flower seedlings, together with Easter decorations for the table. Award winning Marcela will bake both Bohemian and Moravian cakes and pastry, you will find her stand right next to the Slovak “pagáče”, kokedama, Martina’s wasp’s nest jewellery, etc.

PS: this collage was made of last year’s photos

We would like to inform you about the recent development of the FM Jiřák: After the cancellation of the open competition by the Council of the City district Prague 3, the Council has accepted and approved the proposal of councillor Bellu in order for the FM Jiřák to be organized by the public limited company of Prague 3 – Správa zbytkového majetku, a.s.
Based on this fact, we wrote and sent this letter to all the representatives of the City Hall. We have tried to explain all the risks of the farmer’s market being taken over by a company without any experience with organization of such markets. The councillor, Mr. Bellu, is mistaken if he lists the farmer’s market in Prague 6 as an example of a successful case. Even there, the market is organized by a civic society, not a public limited company of the City Hall. The only market that has ever been taken over and maintained by a city hall (as suggested for the FM Jiřák by Mr. Bellu) is the farmer’s market “na Kubáni” in Prague 10, which has permanently been at loss (1,326 million in the year 2015), the number of both farmers and visitors has dropped and since the takeover has to be subsidized by the City Hall of Prague 10. (see here)

Since we don’t want this to happen to the FM Jiřák, we have offered the following proposal to the mayor and councillor Bellu, which we, considering the current situation, regard as sensible. The result or other potential resolution could be heard at a meeting called for by the mayor due to the petition that will happen on Tuesday, January 24th at 15:00 at the City district of Prague 3.

Dear friends, the town hall of Prague 3 decided to announce an open competition for a new organizer of Farmer’s market Jiřák (FM Jiřák) for the season of 2017-2018. We entered the competition and based on the decision of the evaluating committee of the city district Prague 3, we placed 2nd after Word Production, s.r.o. As the founding organization of Farmer’s market Jiřák, we are leaving on December 31st 2016 and in the next two years, another subject is going to take over the maintenance of the farmer’s market. We can’t predict how things are going to unfold, we also don’t know all the details of the decision. If we hear any news, we will be glad to inform you.

Short recapitulation and thanks: In 2010 NGO Archetyp approached (through a letter) the city district of Prague 3 with a request to organize farmer’s market in its area. After a series of negotiation, we signed a contract with the city district of Prague 3 and since September 8th 2010, we maintained the market both in the organizational and ideological sense. First, the market was open for two days a week (Wednesday and Saturday), later Friday and Thursday were added. In 2014 FM Jiřák became a lawful member of the Association of Farmer’s Markets Czech Republic and as the first market in the Czech Republic (and perhaps the only), included the so-called “local documentation certification”. FM Jiřák is know-how of NGO Archetyp.

We want to thank all visitors and of course, all the others who were involved and contributed to the operations of the market!

We, of course, have to take weather into account and since we are not fortune tellers, we can’t tell if it will be freezing or not.

In any case, we will open the market (either with fruit and vegetables or without) for pastry, cheese, meat, sausages, spices, wine, home-made syrups, etc.

Then we will stay open every Saturday from 8am to 2pm.

We are looking forward to seeing you!

There are going to be yellow bags (as they are currently at Jiřák) for plastic waste at Farmer’s market at Náplavka since September. The bags are primarily intended for plastic waste such as cups and plates from snacks. It is appreciated if you can sort the trash the same way you do at Farmer’s market at Jiřák where the waste has been successfully sorted out for more than two years now.

And because we care about the environment where we live, all products containing palm oil were removed from both markets at Náplavka and Jiřák. We would like to continue improving the quality of all products and packaging you buy there to be environmentally friendly. Therefore, we would be happy if you can start bringing your small bags in which you can place the products (either you can repeatedly bring the plastic ones, or you can sew your own made from cloth J). We have already learned how to shop in bags and baskets so let’s move one step forward.

Since we are concerned with ecological impacts around the world and not only within the borders of our country, we focused on the harm caused by the planting of oil palm trees. We carried out an inspection of palm oil occurrence in the products offered at farmer’s markets located in Jiřího z Poděbrad square (further referred to as Jiřák) and by the riverbank of Vltava (further referred to as Náplavka).

The issue of palm oil usage is mostly related to bakers and confectioners who might use it for sweet creams and non-perishable pastries. Nevertheless, we made an agreement about replacing palm oil with another type of oil or fat, which does not have such a significant environmental impact.

At farmers market Jiřák, this change applies to Luka Choceň bakery that is going to produce all of its products palm oil free (palm oil will be replaced with butter, sunflower oil and canola oil). Also, Bio Vavřinec farm is now heavily looking for a supplier of palm oil free chocolate chips necessary for the production of Okrouhlíček. At farmers market Náplavka, it applies to the above mentioned Bio Vavřinec farm and its Okrouhlíček and to Mirečkovo bakery that has switched from palm oil to canola oil.

Therefore, we can now happily claim that all products (except those listed above) that are offered at Jiřák and Náplavka farmer’s markets are palm oil free.

Náplavka market will open up for the last time in 2015 on Saturday 19th of December. Hence you can get ready for the market break in January – visit your favourite sellers, wish them the best in the upcoming year and get some ‘edible’ presents – chocolate, pesto, dried chilli peppers, cheese, dried ham and sausages, wine,
advent-theme decoration and ceramics. Additional mulled wine and ‘topinka’ (a fried slice of bread coming with different spreads on top) to-go is a matter of course! :)

There’s a warm festive atmosphere waiting for you at Jiřák on advent Sundays in December(6th, 13th and 20th).
A Christmas-targeted gifts and food market will open at 11am, close at 6pm and will offer some of the winter pleasures – mulled wine, hot cider or jucies and more! Take your beloved ones with and come, we’re looking forward.

On Saturdays (5th, 12th and 19th) a usual farmers’ market is held. A thematic extension of christmas workshops, live music and great food as a matter of course!

WORKSHOPS OPENING BOTH ON ADVENT SATURDAYS AND SUNDAYS:
– Christmas wreaths (5th and 6th)
– mysterious lamp-shades (12th and 13th)
– cute card-wishes (17th and 18th)

The last market before the Christmas Eve will open for you on the 23rd of December (8am – 6pm), the last two markets of this year then on the 30th and 31st of December – an ideal oppoturnity to wish everyone well in the upcoming year and get some yum-yummies for the New Year’s Eve!

The market season of 2016 begins hopefully with the two last Saturdays in January – 23rd and 30th. That’s nevertheless still to be decided by weather conditions.

JIŘÁK TEAM WISHES EVERYONE A VERY MERRY HOLIDAYS (OF ANY RELIGOUS OR NON-RELIGIOUS KIND) – LOTS OF HAPPY MOMENT AND ALL THE BEST IN 2016!

Citizens’ assossiation Archetyp (managing FM Náplavka since 2010) is delighted to invite you to the festival of young wines that is to be held on 14th of November from 10am to 9pm . Located at the riverbank of ‘Rašínovo nábřeží’ behind the railway bridge (in the direction out-of-the-city) it will form an extension of the usual Saturday market.

St. Martin’s young wine
St. Martin’s wines are the first ones to be produced every season. We are dealing with dry, light, fresh and fruity wines easily consumed. They mature only several weeks and that is how they get their airy character. The fest will offer up to 28 Czech and Moravian wineries with the best selection of young wines and other usual wines.

Roasted goose as a traditional companion of young wines
The iconic symbol of the festival is in deed roasted goose in many of its forms. For lovers of the traditional there can’t be missing roasted goose with dumplings – the golden classic, with pasta or with ‘lokše’ (fried potatoe doughnuts) and of course coming with steamed white and red cabbage. You can be looking forward to goose-burgers, goose-ragú with vegetables, roasted goose liver, roasted backbone, traditional goose soup ‘kaldoun’. From other food selection there’s to be mentioned excellent goat cheese – aging or fresh, first-class smoked products, goulash, roasted prok rind, goose and duck paté, delicate pickled fish products or favourite onion Tarte flambée. We don’t intend to disappoint beer lovers – beer will be served by the minibrewery ‘U Vacků’ from Chlumec nad Cidlinou.

A few words to the tasting
Traditionally we will be tasting exclusively out of glasses as we believe that’s the proper way of wine-tasting. Moreover it eliminates event’s secondary waste and is therefore more environment-friendly option. The tasting set – to be purchased at the info stand – costs 100,- CZK and includes a tasting glass and a catalouge with all the wineries taking part, information on food-stand selection, map of the event and a pen so you’re able to make notes about wines you taste.

Strict demands
St. Martin’s wines certification is based on exact rules. The mark get only a few wine varieties: out of white wines it is Müller-Thurgau, Fruhroter-Veltliner and ‘Muškát moravský’. Out of rosé it will then be St. Laurent, Blauer Portugieser and Zweigeltrebe.
The idea of the festival is to offer this year’s first production and to promote Czech and Moravian wineries.
The panorama of the river and Prague Castle is truly amazing with a glass of wine and a good meal!

There’s no event without music!
A floating stage will be part of the event and it will host some of the fine musicians: traditional cimbalom folk band Trnka (CZ), swing rhytms played by the band Hot Wings (CZ), then Cílená Nejistota (CZ) – playing music more suitable for the evening and the créme de la créme – majestic Atmasféra (UA) will finish a fantastic day.

The event is held under the protection of Marian Jurečka – the minister of Agriculture.

HALLOWEEN FESTIVAL ON 30th AND 31st OCTOBER
FRIDAY 8am – 6.30pm (till the darkness arrives :)
SATURDAY 8am – 2pm

Come to have fun at the market on this day filled with delicious pumpkins, little bit of an autumn creepy atmosphere, hot teas, candles and music!
The main star of the day will the glorious pumpkin, this – one would almost say rediscovered – vegetable that won’t stop surprising us with all the shapes, sizes and colours in which it occurres.
Let’s also all remember all the good souls that had passed away and
honnour them by lightening a candle.

So what is there to be found next to the regular market? There’s definitely an emphasis on the pumpkin (pumpkins of all sizes!) and floral section so the event is colourful. Then – of course – there can’t be sweets missing when Halloween. We’ll be celebrating with nice pumpkin-oriented delicatessen ranging from a grilled pumpkin to the immortal and loved pumpkin soup.

YOU CAN CRAVE YOUR OWN PUMPKIN AND THERE’S A SPECIAL FACEPAINTING WORKSHOP WAITING FOR YOU!
(FRI 10am-5pm, SAT 10am – 2pm)

ON FRIDAY evening 5-7pm – there’ll be an evening show of craved pumpkins where we’ll all light up the candles at the same time.
THEN – if there’s interest, there’ll be a small herd-walk with the lanterns.

The event is children- and dogs-friendly, bring everyone out, we’re looking forward to seeing you!!!

Kindly, your Archetyp

Come and see for yourself! On Friday 9. 10. (8am – 6pm) and Saturday 10. 10. (8am – 2pm) the apple festival is being held with all of its features! Up to 15 Czech pomiculturers will be happy to tell you everything about apple species they specialize for. The genuine kinds that our greatgrandmoms remember cultivating as well as the new ‘modern’ species.

Besides all the beautiful kinds of apples there will be a selection of finest ciders waiting for you to taste them! A live band CIRKUS PROBLEM  is performing on Saturday 10. 10. to please our hearts and ears – come and support their fantastic and playful music!

A theatre for children can’t be missing: a performance will start on Saturday at 10am and 12am, take your young ones out with you!

On the top of the things a romantic open fire will be waiting for you: you can bake yourself an apple or a potatoe and welcome the knocking-on-the-door autumn.

The apple fest is not about apples only – pears and other fruit will be with us, too! Syrups, juices, ‘kolache’ (sweet baked goods), jams and marmalades, purée, dried fruit, patée, spreads and much more! As a matter of course – a juciery on-wheels will be ready for everyone to squeeze out juice out of their most favourite kinds!
Our honnourable guest – Mr. Martin Ludvík, the chairman of the Czech Pomiculture Union  – will be with us answering all the questions revolving around apples and fruit in general and will be guiding us through a traditional show of different apple kinds. You can taste them all!

The Farmers’ Market will be held as usual.
We are looking forwards to seeing you!

Sweet times are about to overwhelm the FM Jiřák on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th of October : this seasons celebration of the Czech honey is about to be held. Up to 20 beekeepers and honey-products manufacturers to be found and visited at Jiřího z Poděbrad square. The usual farmers‘ market will run with no restrictions both days of the festival.

We’d like to pay a tribute to all the bees and beekeepers for the hard work done as well as for all the honey produced. Let us all celebrate the miracle of nature called honey! As a matter of course, live music and program for kids won’t be missing. Get your load of honey for the whole winter, talk to the beekeepers yourself about anything you want to know about honey! Except for many kinds of honey itself, there’s other products waiting for you to discover: ginger-bread, ‘medovník‘ – famous layered honey cake, honey cosmetics, honey coffee, mead (honey liqueur), honey beer, at-the-spot-baked honey barbeque ribs and other refreshments – savoury or sweet.

FOR KIDS – on Saturday 19th there will be a program POHÁDKY (Fairy tales) approximately 40 minutes long starting at 10am and 12am prepared.
Other than the Fairy tales for kids, Autumn Honey Days have other activities to offer. You can make yourself a beewax candle at the workshop, there will be a demonstrative glass beehive there so everyone can look closer at the life of these peculiar animals. Finally a ‘medomet‘ (a beekeeping tool for getting honey squeezed out of honeycombs) and other tools will be there to be examined. You can even try squeezing out honey yourself!

THE USUAL FARMERS‘ MARKET JIŘÁK IS TO BE HELD WITH NO RESTRICTIONS.

The event is to be held on Friday 18th of October (8am – 6pm) and 19th of October (8am – 2pm) at Jiřího z Poděbrad square. You can join our fb event or look at the video from Autumn days of Czech Honey 2013.

Farmers’ market Jiřák is waking up from the winters sleep slowly!

On Saturdays of 10th and 17th January 9am – 12am – ‘BOXES’ style (no stands) – featuring eggs and vegetables (potatoes, savoy cabbage, beetroot, celery, parsley, onions, black raddish)

On Saturdays of 24th and 31st January 8am – 2pm – featuring a small version of the market. No worries though, you’ll find everything essential here.

We’re hardly working on the concept of the season 2015. If there’s no harsh weather conditions, we’ll run the market at its full strenght (Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays) starting by February!

Opening day at the Náplavka market is planned for the 14th of February.

The season of 2015 will offer thematic events as we’re used to it from past years.

We’re looking forward to you joining us at one of the markets!

When you bring and idea to life, you keep doing your very best for five years, everyone seems to be enjoying what you do and you pay the city a rent of 140.000,- CZK per month you’d expect everything to be smooth. That doesn’t seem to be the case when it comes to Náplavkas market though.

Responsible authorities insist on relocating the Náplavka market further out of the centre of the town which shrinks the market down and brings it further away from the subway.
The main reason for that is to create space for other new events. The only information known about these events is that they need this very spot that’s been a favourite Saturday market place for five seasons already. Following was introduced as an advantage of the new market-spot: ‘the market won’t have to be moved further away percussively, it’ll have a stable spot period instead.’ – this doesn’t make sense to us. If we think of relocating the market further away occasionaly as being a disadvatage, where is that advantage in market being relocated permanently?

In case of the change we’ll have to cut down one third of all current Náplavkas stands. Others will face trouble with the new spot being too narrow (cars necessary to refridgerate the goods won’t fit; stands that require more space squared are also ‘out of the game’)

What can you as a visitor do? A petiton founded by Náplavkas friends and fans has been circling around for some timenby now. You can sign at various places as well as online: www.petice-naplavka.cz
(the site’s in Czech; the short version in English to be found below)

Text of the petition ‘FOR MAINTENANCE OF NÁPLAVKAS FARMERS’ MARKET’:

We – below signed citizens – require the Náplavka market to stay at its original spot near to the Palackého bridge. We don’t wish it to be permanently removed further away to the spot behind the Railway bridge. The current place is well known to all of its visitors. The new spot would only make the conditions for markets participants and visitors worse. Its permanent relocation would be no advantage because of following reasons:

1. One of the announced advantages of the new spot is that the market wouldn’t have to be relocated occassionaly. In deed it would be relocated to the less-attractive spot permanently. We don’t see any advantage here nevertheless.

2. As we were used to, the market was occasionaly relocated because of other events (Primátorky, Lodě na Vodě) – there wasn’t any problem with this, we’d always announce the relocation on time. Furthermore, we know well that the size of some of the events requires the whole lenght of the river-banks. Shortly said: the relocation of the
market wouldn’t guarantee its stable spot anyway.

3. There’ll be significant decrease of current Náplavkas stands in case of the relocation. That’s a disadvantage for those who wouldn’t participate anymore and would loose their business (that’s quite significant in many cases). From out standpoint it represents a disadvatange for Náplavkas visitor as well since everyone’s used to have a
great number of stands at the market.

4. The permanent relocation would also restrict the possibility of the farmers having their cars (needed for supplying and refridgeration) at their stands. No one wants their greens faded though…

5. The fact that the market would be further away from the Subway station is no advantage for us either. Parking at the whole river-banks isn’t allowed and there’s mostly blue (residental) zones around it. In other words, further away from the Subway the worse for visitors.

6. Market is here on Saturdays 8am – 4pm only. Its current spot at the river-banks can be used for other events at some of the different time and days.

7. We also disagree with relocation of boats that harbour at the river-banks. (loď bratří Formanů, Kristian Marco, Avoid Gallery)

Let’s keep the market its current quality. Thank you for supporting us.

The petition’s gonna be addressed to the Magistrát hlavního města Prahy (Prague’s Municipal Council), Mariánské nám. 2, Praha 1.
Its boards delegate is Mr. Erik Čipera, Levá 23/390, 147 00 Praha 4 – Podolí

Jablko

Join us on Friday 10th (8am – 8pm) and Saturday 11th (8am – 2pm) to celebrate what fruit trees’ve been on this season!
Taste different kinds of apple, this often underestimated beneficial fruit cultivated by our species for centuries.
There’ll be over 50 varieties!
Did you know that the Czech pomiculture, especially then the environmental-friendly one is of a stunning quality?
Are you thinking about some recipe – not really sure which variety does suit it most?
Come and have a chat with fruit-growers to get authentic answers and advice on your own!
As you may have expected, except for many varieties of apples you’ll find everything possible made out of them – fresh juices, syrups, ciders, baked goods – pies and cakes first of all, jams, marmelades, dried apples, patés and a fine selection of an apple- influenced gastronomy!
As it became a tradition, the place of honnor is dedicated to the Czech Fruit Union, our partner and co-promoter. Moreover we’ll benefit from the presence of mister Martin Ludvík – the chairman of the Union – himself: he’ll be offering some of those almost ancient varieties like ‘Matčino’ (Mothers) or ‘Panenské’ (Virgin) while
talking about anything that revolves around apples and their cultivation.
Don’t worry – the usual farmers’ market stays in its full setup so you’ll definitely find all of your favourite-ones.
Live music, kids’ workshop and live theatre, a mobile Cider-house joining our cause! Make sure not to miss!

The minister of Agriculture – Marian Jurečka – has finally encouraged his colleagues from other departments to supply all the governmental cantinas with Czech food. We’re most delighted by his appeal not only because it promotes domestic products, but also because it’s an in deed positive response to the official letter that the Czech Farmers’ Markets Association sent him in February this year.

We’re delighted to announce that there’s the second year of festival of small and mini Czech breweries – ‘Pivo na Náplavce‘ to be held. The two days of praising more than 100 of beer-specials made by 40 excellent Czech small/mini breweries will begin on Friday 30th at 2pm and will continue on Saturday 31st from 11am. Both festival days will finish by 9pm. The festival will be located at the usual Saturday’s Market spot – on the right side of the river, in between the ‘Palackého‘ bridge and the Railway bridge.

Since the limited edition of beer prepared for ‘Pivo na Náplavce‘ in 2013 was a big success, we‘ve decided to make a tradition out of it. This time there’ll be 300 litres of 12% light lager waiting for you in bottles or on tap (draft form available on Saturday from 2pm) under the honnourable title ‘Vltavský motýlek‘ (Vltava’s Butterfly). For purpose of making a load of festival’s beer we asked no other but ‘Plzeňský Pašák‘, the proud winner of ‘Pivo na Náplavce‘ 2013 Most-Favourite-Brewery Competition. The profit from draft Vltava’s Butterfly will be dedicated to the NGO ‘Ztracené dítě‘ (cooperating on international level with the NGO ‘Missing children Europe‘), providing help for children and adults in need.

We couldn’t even imagine the beer festival with no beer souvenirs. Except for the fact, that every stand will offer their own beer souvenirs, there will be souvenirs of ‘Vltava’s Butterfly‘ available, too. And as a part of the Saturday’s programme, there’ll be the beer-flea market (11am-2pm) held by the members of the Prague’s Beer Souvenir Collector Society.

Even those, who don’t favour beer, won’t be disappointed. There’ll be Czech limonades, ciders and perhaps even some harsher alcoholic beverages. For all the foodies, there’ll be a lot of so called beer gastronomy to enjoy: juicy burgers, fish and smoked products on grill, fried potato chips, all kinds of spreads coming on delicious bread, original crepes, vegetarian specialties and other delicatessen will be waiting for you! And as a matter of course, there’ll be a usual Saturday’s Farmers‘ Market running from 8am to 2pm elegantly attachted to the festival.

We’ve prepared a cultural programme to please your souls. Andrej Polák and Pavel Richta will guide us through it together with the bands Calm Season, Hot Wings Band, Fabric Relations, Aurora Jazzband, the Fribbles and the DJ Kid Dynamit.

Instead of the classic ticket, the entrance will be in the form of a beer-mug (that will be later used for the degustation). There will be two types of them for you to choose: a labelled one, coming in a set together with a pen, a beermat and a catalogue of all the breweries participating. This set’s price will be 200,- CZK. The other variant is a non-labelled beer-mug: coming either solo (60,- CZK) or in a set for advantageous price (80,- CZK).

We’re deeply honnoured that Marian Jurečka, the Minister of Agriculture, and Jiří Vávra, the deputy minister of the Prague‘s Mayor, have both taken the patronage over ‘Pivo na Náplavce‘ 2014.

Coming and drafting soon:

SMALL BREWERIES (annual beer production 10 000 – 200 000 hL):

‘Bakalář Rakovník‘; ‘Dudák Strakonice‘; ‘Ferdinand Benešov‘; ‘Chotěboř‘; ‘Nová Paka‘; ‘Konrad Vratislavice‘; ‘Primátor Náchod‘; ‘Postřižiny Nymburk‘ a ‘Lobkowicz‘ Breweries (‘Černá Hora‘, ‘Rychtář Hlinsko‘ a ‘Vysoký Chlumec‘)

MINIBREWERIES (annual beer production up to 10 000 hL):

‘Antoš Slaný‘; ‘Bizon Čižice‘; ‘Břevnovský klášterní pivovar sv. Vojtěcha Praha‘ (‘Břevnov’s monastery brewery of St. Vojtech in Prague‘); ‘Hostomice pod Brdy‘; ‘Institue of Hops in Žatec‘ – the experimental brewery; ‘Chýně‘; ‘Brewery Kounice‘; ‘Kozlíček Horní Dubenky‘; ‘Lipan Dražíč‘; ‘Maxmilian Kroměříž‘; ‘MMX Lety u Dobřichovic‘; ‘The Blue Star Dobřany‘; ‘Mostecký Kahan‘; ‘Na Rychtě Ústí nad Labem‘; ‘Prague’s New Town brewery‘; ‘Permon Sokolov‘; ‘The Brewery House of Zvíkov‘; ‘Plzeňský Pašák‘; ‘Podlesí‘; ‘The First Private Yet Social Brewery (Svatovar) Lipník nad Bečvou‘; ‘Purkmistr Plzeň‘; ‘Jihlava’s City Hall Brewery‘; ‘The Blind Ground Hog Ujkovice‘; ‘Starokladno‘; ‘U Stočesů Rokycany‘; ‘The Three Roses of Prague‘; ‘Valášek Vsetín‘; ‘Všerad Všeradice‘

BREWERIES WITH NO HOME BREWERIES (‘FLYING BREWERIES‘):

Dear friends, on the base of the article from 4.4.2014 (please be aware of it being in Czech):  http://byznys.lidovky.cz/zmizi-trhy-z-namesti-jiriho-z-podebrad-radnice-chce-vic-penez-p52-/moje-penize.aspx?c=A140404_102459_moje-penize_mev – we want to respond to your interest in destiny of Easter fest and other spring – early summer festivals at Jiřák’s FM. The council of Prague 3 (‘Rada MČ Praha 3’) denied  (the link to the official denial is to be seen below, in Czech only) the request for appropriation of space for the thematic festivals mentioned. The reason the council adduced is following: ‘… current size of the market … satisfyingly ensures the possibility of realizing events mentioned in the request.’ Nevertheless, according to our experience, festivals such as Easter fest, Spring herbal fest, Rosy May, Strawberry fest cannot be realized within the standart market because of technical reasons. Festivals mentioned above are traditionally accompanied by live music, kids’ workshop, culinary or crafty products-processing, stalls of direct cultivators. How would we fit all in? We wrote our point of view down and sent the Council a letter on the 3rd of April (to be seen below, in Czech only) – that’s all we as an apolitical organization can do. The City of Prague 3 (‘MČ Praha 3′) runs the market, we’re only an NGO authorized to organize and secure it. We do respect the Council’s decision. Furthermore, we’ve always highly appreciated the support of the City of Prague 3 when it comes to the cause of farmers’ markets, the support of Czech products and direct producers. We’re sorry for the inconvenience and hoping for your understanding.

Desicion of the Council of Prague 3 on the Jiřák’s festivals HERE

Report of the reason of denial HERE

Žižkov’s carnival, traditionally held by the city’s municipal district of Prague 3, will begin at the Jiřák square on the first of March. On this day, there’s a program for kids prepared: they can make their own masque in the heated tent from 10am till 3pm, afterthat there’s a parade around the church ‘Nejsvětější srdce páně‘ (the only church on the square J ) to happen. Créme de la créme of the day will certainly be the concert of well-known ‘babypunk‘ band ‘Kašpárek v Rohlíku‘ from 3pm till 4pm.

The duration of the Market at Jiřák are for the reasons mentioned above prolongated till 5pm extraordinarily.

Except for its usual offer, the Saturday’s carnival market will be focused on the celebration as well. You will surely find first-quality smoked-products, pastry, all kinds of refreshments, wine, beer or lemonades.

The Carnival at Praague 3 will last from the 1st till the 4th March. The grand final will traditionally be the parade with free food and the concert of the band ‘Vltava‘ on Tuesday the 4th of March. Further information is to be found on posters.

New season will start on 25th of the January 2014 at farmers market Jiřák and at farmers market Náplavka will start 15th February.
It all depends on the weather. If the temperatures revolve around zero, Jiřák will run on all of its usual days. But if the conditions are harsher than that, Jiřák would be open on Saturdays only. We‘ll keep updating closer information at our webpage and facebook.

We wish you a very merry Christmas, all the best in the upcoming year, a lot of health, happiness and love and let’s meet in 2014 at the markets!

Try your luck at Jiřák’s ‘handcrafted‘ Sundays! A broad selection of jewelery, ceramics, textile, hand-made and blown glass objects, blacksmiths, author’s books and candles will bring some inspiration surely. All of that made strictly by Czech designers. You can support a sheltered workshop of mentally disabled by buying soap, herbal bath and toys.  As ‘créme de la créme‘ we are proud to announce that there is the only Czech producer of traditional pastilles on the last Sunday before the Christmas Eve. The programme for kids and live music included.

THE VERY LAST MARKET OF THE SEASON 2013 or else the set up for the New Year’s Eve

The last market of this year will be celebrated on Saturday 28th, we will thank for this year‘s crops and start looking forward to the next one. Open sandwiches, genuine whipped cream ‘pinwheels‘, wine, sweet pastry, smoked products, cheese, pickles – all of that for your disposal from 8am till 6pm in presence of bands The Brownies and Motovidlo.

WHEN DOES THE SEASON 2014 BEGIN:
We plan the first market at Jiřák for 25th of January 2014.
Nevertheless the weather conditions are crucial. If temperatures happen to revolve around 0°C or even above zero (we would wish!) we will begin with the season at Jiřák in full operation (Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays). In other case, when temperatures below -5°C and less, we will keep busy on Saturdays only. Why? Because the market on Saturday is shorter and therefore easier to outlive. :)

In any case please follow our website and facebook for the most actual information and possible changes of plans !

WHEN?
ON MONDAY 11/11/2013!
St. Martin’s Day without wine and a roasted goose? That’s unthinkable! St. Martin’s young wine (the Czech Republic’s Beaujolais nouveau) after nine years of modern existence has become, quite literally, a national phenomenon. Although the year 2011 saw a great deal of fascination with this wine, its popularity and consumption continues to grow year after year, which is, of course, what its producers had hoped for. This fact is not only confirmed by the achievement of selling two million bottles last year, but also the popularity of its pairing with St. Martin’s goose at the yearly St. Martin’s Festival at náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad.

Last year, despite the cold and rainy weather, the event brought an estimated 8,000 visitors. This year the festival will be held on Monday 11 November and will kick off at 11:11, as is tradition.

They say that you can always find the good in the bad. This certainly holds true for winegrowers during this past year, which was complicated, to say the least. At first, the growing season was delayed. Warm days then compensated for this loss, but the summer heat and dryness again slowed growth. There was a big problem with vine mildew and pressure from fungal diseases, which spreads at vineyards very quickly. Winegrowers, who were in the vineyards daily, reacted quickly and brought this problem under control. Healthy grapes then formed and the course of September’s weather, mainly rainfall in late August and early September, improved their quality. The results of their work: this year’s St. Martin wine will be personally presented to us by more than 20 Moravian and Czech wineries!

Accompanying Fare
In addition to St. Martin’s wine, visitors to Jiřák can look forward to interesting accompanying gastronomy – traditional roasted goose with dumplings and cabbage and many other tasty wine accompaniments (various cheeses, salamis, ham, high quality sausages, roasted potatoes, gnocchi, pickled delicacies, savory pancakes, Slovak koláč, etc.) Ever year at Jiřák more than 2000 portions of roasted goose with dumplings and cabbage are sold. It is always a difficult test of preparation. In many cases, visitors have picked up this delicacy to go, pairing it with St. Martin’s wine to savor in the peace of their home. In this case, however, it is not flavored with the addition of live music.

The festival will feature live music from 14:00 to 20:00. Traditionally lead by cymbal music, this year (just like at the festival Rosé May) Cimbálová muzika Galán will play, followed by Marow, known from Colors of Ostrava 2012, and finally our favorite Ukrainian band, seemingly mystically formed, Atmasféra, who’s coming to the Czech Republic just for us. :) Hear a sample of their music here: http://www.atmasfera.com/audio. Listen to Nama Om from their last album Forgotten Love. But who do we look forward to seeing most of all? You!

As is tradition, Zdeněk Wasserbauer, Th.D. from the Sacred Heart of Jesus church at náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad will bless the young wine.

The St. Martin’s Day Festival takes places with the cooperation of Prague 3 and under the auspices of the Vinařský fond.

WHEN: 11 October 2013 10:00 – 20:00, WHERE: náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad, Prague 3

As with last year, the aim this year is to promote Czech growers, careful apple growing practices, and the diversity of this Czech fruit. The festival will feature fifteen growers and a seemingly infinite variety of apples, including Rubín, Bohemia, Šampion, Melodie, Rubinola, Gloster, Topaz, Golden Delicious, Idared, Spartan and others.

Juices, cider, syrups, koláč, strudel, purée, compote, preserves, and just about everything else related to apples, including apple gastronomy, will be presented on 11 October 2013 at the Apple Festival at Jiřák. The festival will feature entertainment for children and adults and “live” juicing and fruit carving, with the latter presented by Luděk Procházka and his studio. Younger festivalgoers can look forward to a creative workshop and the theater company Divadlo 2buchet, whose keen wit never disappoints.

And what would a festival be without music? No!
Dva, Fribbles, Vojta Lavička and Aqua Jazz will all play live. This event is being held under the auspices of the Minister of Agriculture of the Czech Republic and the Fruit Union of the Czech Republic (Ovocnářské unie České republiky) and with support from the Prague 3 district.

The traditional Jiřák Farmers Market will be held alongside the Apple Festival.

We welcome you to join us on Friday 27 September at Jiřák for the second-annual A Fall Day of Czech Honey, an event where we celebrate this much needed and irreplaceable food, accompanied by a program for children as well as live music. All throughout the world sustaining bee populations is starting to become a problem, an issue linked with the wide use of aggressive pesticides in planting. With this event we are happy to support Czech beekeeping and the preservation of this important industry. Twenty beekeepers and producers of honey products on the last Friday in September will visit náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad.  Honey gingerbread, honey cake, honey combs, honey cosmetics, honey wine and, of course, excellent Czech honey will be available to visitors of this festival. A farmers market, where you can buy groceries from Czech farmers and vendors, will be a part of this festival, and Mario Bihari, Urband, guitar trio Pendl and Basskid Jazzband will accompany the fine fare with music. For children, there will be an educational program in the form of bee paths, as well as a glass hive, in which it will be possible to observe a bee colony. Additionally, you and your kids can make candles from bees wax or check out a display of objects with which honey is packaged. You can also have some fun with Divadlo 2 Buchet, who have prepared a funny performance on the theme of the festival. The event will take place from 10:00 to 20:00 at náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad. More information can be found at www.farmarsketrziste.cz or at www.facebook.com/ftpraha.

After the cancellation of May’s Pivo at Náplavka festival, when Prague was inundated with flood waters, the beer tasting festival featuring small and mini Czech breweries is being held at the same location during the first week of October – on Friday and Saturday 4-5/10/2013. At Pivo at Náplavka you will be able to sample more than 70 specialty beers from 30 small and mini breweries. The Farmers Market Naplavka is open also as usually!
Don’t miss out on the music program, which is still just as it was originally planned – all of May’s musicians promised to attend the October event, so come and listen to Garage, The Brownies, Laco Deczi & Celula New York (from far-away America) and ZVA 12-28 Band (from Zvolen, Slovakia). In addition to these traditional live performances, the culture of the festival will be enriched by DJ Kid Dynamit and DJ Ollgoy. For children, there will be a program and theater, and so you can come with your friends or your family.

Prague will have, we hope, a tasting festival, where emphasis will be placed on the culture of beer with a style of tasting typical of, for example, wine. Each person who wants to try these gems of beer will buy a tasting set for 200 Kč, which will contain a festival tasting glass, catalog, pen, and limited edition anniversary (festival) coaster. The beer glass will be used for both days of the festival and it will be possible to return the purchased glass to receive 50 Kč.

As is already tradition, the festival, particularly the beer, will be accompanied by fine food. At the Pivo at Náplavka festival we can promise first-class gastronomy. You can look forward to smoked fish, fish specialties, Czech and salt-water fish and other fruits of the sea right off the grill. There will be high quality grilled sausages, pickled and grilled vegetables, pljeskavica, Bosnian, Slovenian, and Hungarian food, home-fried potatoes, headcheese with onions, goulash, pickled and cut cheeses, and other delicacies suitable for beer – all will be prepared to satisfy your taste buds.

It is not well known that some of our brewers produce their own sodas. In addition to tried and true lemonade, raspberry or cola sodas, your little ones will be able to sample elderberry and grape soda or even a soda with hops.

The festival will take place on 4 October (from 14:00 to 21:00) and on 5 October (from 11:00 to 21:00) at Náplavka at Rašínovo nábřeží between the Palacký bridge and the train bridge at Výton. The following brewers have confirmed their attendance: Pivovary Lobkowicz – pivovary Černá Hora, Rychtář Hlinsko, Janáček Uherský Brod, Ježek Jihlava, Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou, Vysoký Chlumec and Platan Protivín; Bakalář (Rakovník); Bravůr (Loučná nad Desnou); Břevnovský klášterní pivovar (Prague); Dudák (Strakonice); Ferdinand (Benešov); Chotěboř; Jihlavský radniční pivovar (Jihlava); Konrad (Vratislavice nad Nisou), Kounický pivovar (Kounice); Kozlíček (Horní Dubenky); MMX (Lety u Dobřichovic); Mostecký Kahan (Most); Nová Paka; Permon (Sokolov); Plzeňský Pašák (Plzeň); Pivovarský dvůr Chýně; Pivovarský dvůr Zvíkov; Primátor (Náchod); První soukromý pivovar společenský (Lipník nad Bečvou); Starokladenský pivovar U Kozlíků (Kladno); U Stočesů (Rokycany); Valášek (Vsetín); Želivský klášterní pivovar (Želiv)

The festival is being held under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czech Republic. More information, including a detailed program, can be found at www.pivonanaplavce.cz and www.farmarsketrziste.cz or on the Facebook page of the Prague Farmers Market www.facebook.com/ftpraha.

Mark your calendars on the last Saturday in August (30/08/2013) to attend the Jiřák Farmers Market for the Herbs, Spices, and Tea Festival.
Dried herb and tea mixtures, spices from the Czech Republic and around the world, potted herbs, herbal ointments, a tea bar – all this and more will be found throughout the festival.
Would you like to dry your own tea mixtures? Do you know what to do with good mint, or why after a little lemon balm one falls asleep so easily? Which herb is the best for digestion and when should one collect herbs from the meadow? You can get answers to such questions right at the festival of herbs, spices and tea.
The festival will also include a program for children. You can look forward to an herb workshop for children and parents as well as pleasant music. “We think that herbs and their healing power interest many. So, naturally, we’re building upon our spring Herb Festival, where herbs were presented in their early stages. Harvest time is now approaching, and so I’m curious what all can be done with them,” said Jiří Sedláček, Chair of the civic association Archetyp, and organizer of the Jiřák and Náplavka Farmers Markets.

The festival will also include a program for children. You can look forward to a performance and a children’s workshop on the theme, “The Forest and its Treasures.” You also won’t want to miss the live music that is a major part of the festivities.

Friday 21/6 at Jiřák (9:00-18:00)

Strawberry season is back again. Strawberry Fest will feature the sweetest strawberries from Czech farmers, live music, a dance hall, a chocolate fountain for dipping strawberries, and strawberry snacks of all shapes and sizes – strawberry shakes, cheesecake, koláč, skewers, tarts, cupcakes, strawberry sushi, and ice cream.

Few people know that in Bohemia we have our own Czech strawberry varieties, which prevail over all imports with their sweet flavor and high quality. Strawberries that come by truck and make their journey through warehouses are actually grown principally to maximize shelf life, not for delicious flavor, sweetness, or tenderness. Conversely, the sweeter and juicier the variety, the more fragile and ephemeral it is after being picked. Therefore, the sweetest and tastiest Czech varieties are intended only for quick consumption and do not make it to chain stores or warehouses. Then it is these we can enjoy, those that are freshly picked, at the Farmers Market! Strawberries are harvested in the morning, before the sun heats up, in order to ensure the fruit is fresh. Our growers from around Prague and central Bohemia will be participating in the strawberry festivities.

The Prague government managed to clean up the Náplavka riverfront (at Rašínovo) rather quickly after the recent flood, and this Saturday 22 June the farmers market will take place (hooray!). Come down between eight and two to support the farmers or simply for a little coffee or lunch.
The classical assortment of goods, fresh and in season, will be waiting for you – strawberries, asparagus, kohlrabi, cauliflower, cut herbs, fresh chicken, high quality smoked meats, excellent sweets, and many other products. And more – strawberry workshop for kids (http://www.farmarsketrziste.cz/dilny) and chocolate fountain!
We look forward to seeing you there!

Vltavský plavec (Vltava swimmer) 13° light (an unpasteurized and unfiltered specialty beer from the workshops of the mini-brewery Plzeňský pašák) had certain planned variegation and due to the recent flooding that ultimately postponed the festival of small and mini brewers “Pivo na Náplavka,” is, with a bit of exaggeration, swimming to Prague. Because this concerns an unpasteurized and unfiltered beer, thus one that is still living, it’s not possible to delay its consumption too much, and we decided that we should now offer this batch to those interested; and we’ll have a different beer made by the new organizing date of the festival.

Sale of Vltavský plavec begins on Friday 14 June at the Jiřák Farmers Market (náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad, Prague 3). You may buy it every Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at the Jiřák Farmers Market and also every Saturday at the Náplavka Farmers Market. You can choose from both a liter “fiver” and glass half-liter with a patented cap.
You can get them at the booth with the draft Bakalář Rakovník, respectively beer from the Kounický Brewery.

We look forward to your visit, and we strongly believe that you’ll like Vltavský plavec!

Rhubarb sprouts up in spring just as the last frost fades away. Only the rhubarb stalks are edible. Harvest time lasts until mid June – according to tradition until the day of Svaty Jan (24 June). There is actually more oxalic acid in older leafstalks than in younger ones, and in large quantities this acid stresses the kidneys. For the same reason, one should not prepare rhubarb in an aluminum pot because aluminum reacts with oxalic acid. One must harvest the leafstalks while they are still young. Ideally, they’ll measure 30 to 40 centimeters, any longer and they’ll begin to become tough and woody and the wonderful and highly acclaimed aroma from such dry stalks will disappear. It’s ideal to get rhubarb from a good farmers market. Everyone who brings rhubarb to Jiřák and Náplavka is a direct and authorized grower.

Our farmers, in detail: http://www.farmarsketrziste.cz/en/certified-farmers All the rhubarb here is harvested by traditional family farmers, therefore it is in the best condition, and the leafstalks are harvested when they are young and fresh.

When, where, and for what price can you get rhubarb at Jiřák and Náplavka?:

On Wednesday at Jiřák:

Dřísy Nursery…. 25-30Kč/approx. 0.5 kg package
Kostka Vegetables from Kopisty…. 40 Kč/approx. 0.75 kg package (Here they have the rhubarb variety known as “raspberry,” which has a distinct fruit flavor and aroma.)
Ovčáry Vegetables… 50-60 Kč/kg

On Friday at Jiřák:

Dřísy Nursery…. 25Kč/approx. 0.5 kg package
Kostka Vegetables from Kopisty…. 40 Kč/approx. 0.75 kg package (Here they have the rhubarb variety known as “raspberry,” which has a distinct fruit flavor and aroma.)

On Saturday at Jiřák:

Dřísy Nursery…. 25Kč/approx. 0.5 kg package
Tišice Vegetables…. approx. 50 Kč/kg

On Saturday at Náplavka:

Šťastný Family Vegetables…. approx. 50-55 Kč/kg
Ovčáry Vegetables… approx. 50 Kč/kg
Kalibanový Family Vegetables approx. 50 Kč/kg

What to do with rhubarb?

Rhubarb needs to be prepared with heat. It’s pleasant to work with, as young leafstalks only need to be peeled a little bit (I actually don’t peel them at all), they’re easy to cut, and their color range during cooking is miraculous – from raspberry red to light green – and that flavor! For me rhubarb is always a special occasion, a sign that summer and the most beautiful part of the year is coming. :)

One excellent choice, for example, is strawberry preserves with rhubarb. I recommend three parts strawberries to one part rhubarb and a pinch of pure vanilla.

A legendary and simple treat is rhubarb koláč with curds (Curds or yogurt lessen the effect of oxalic acid in rhubarb, but this isn’t necessary. Only a very small percent of people tend to have problems with rhubarb.)

Also excellent is rhubarb as a side with steak, stewed with meat, lightly salted.

RECIPE – Curd koláč with rhubarb

Ingredients for dry dough:

2 cups of medium ground whole-wheat flour (I recommend BioVavřince)
½ cup of whole-wheat fine semolina (BioVavřince again :) )
0.5 – 1 cup of sugar, depending on how sweet you want it
1 baking powder
300 grams of cream (or 150 grams of butter)

Ingredients for filling:

750 grams of curds
3 eggs
1 cup of powdered sugar
1 vanilla sugar
400 grams of rhubarb
A little powdered sugar for sprinkling
A little cinnamon
Baking paper

Preparation:

Mix the ingredients for the dry dough – flour, fine semolina, sugar and baking powder. Lay out the baking paper on a baking sheet with high sides. Don’t grease it, but put on the paper half of the dry dough mixture. Next, make the curd filling. Mix the curds with the eggs, and pour the filling on the dry dough mix on the paper in the pan. Place pieces of cut rhubarb on the filling. Sprinkle the other half of the dry dough mixture on top and then pour the cream all over it. Finally, sprinkle it very lightly with cinnamon. Another option is to put cut pieces of butter on top instead of cream. Bake at approx.180-200°C.

When at 6:40 in the morning I saw through the dark window descending sheets of water, I didn’t go back to sleep and instead prayed until about 10:00 that it would stop. Luckily our prayers were answered, the rain ceased, the overcast sky started to part, and in the end the sun began to shine. The Jiřák Farmers Market ran at full blast and groups started to form around artists from the Fler.cz family, the largest being at the glassmaker, who was powering a large propane tank. The brave glassmaker Mr. Douša blew and hand-rotated glass while visitors, including children, couldn’t peel their eyes away. The sun drenched the entire square, and the tones of cymbals could be heard from “Galán” of Tvrdonice and the folk dance ensemble “Svéráz”. In addition to the incredible sounds of cymbals, fiddles, and violins, we were amazed to see the male choirs and the Tvrdonice folk costumes. Dancers taught folk dance steps while the first swing group was getting ready among them. At this time the winemakers were already pouring, giving out samples as the square slowly filled. Some were dancing, others were drinking and enjoying food; another was simply lying on a blanket relaxing on the grass. Swing music, wine and singing continued until 10:00 at night. I think that everyone had a thoroughly good time!

If you are desperate wanting farmer’s food, you can visit farmer’s market at ‘Jiřák’, where you will find many usual Náplavka’s farmers. Thank you for your understanding.

The program at the squere will be started with a dance swing music from 30 years to it’s  peak. You will be able to taste some good snack or cheese from our Czech farmers.

We are introdusing 27 wine growers from Moravia and Bohemia. The free wine tasting is applyed only to rose wine (and claret) and our winemakers will pour it for you into the festival tasting glass, that the visitors will buy there.
